CONTROL LOCAL TV AND RADIO STATIONS

“I created the Localism Task Force to evaluate how broadcasters are serving their local communities. Broadcasters must serve the public interest, and the Commission has consistently interpreted this to require broadcast licensees to air programming that is responsive to the interests and needs of their communities.”

- Past FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell

As an American, you own public radio and televisions waves. With your approval, local radio and television broadcasters are granted programming licenses to serve your community's interest. Therefore, every broadcaster in this country should be airing programming that reflects your community's interests. In fact, broadcasters must publicly announce their license is up for renewal to give the general public notice to voice any concerns about the station's commitment to the community. Again, local television and radio broadcasting is required to serve the community rather than provide a disservice. As an American, you have a right to ensure broadcasters live up to their agreement through voicing your concerns to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) if necessary. Importantly, you do not have to wait until a station's license is up for renewal to voice your concerns.
